- Kathy Shogren of Assaria, Ks. took this photo June 9, 2008 of a
wheel bug nymph, a member of the assassin family. Though not very
big, this stage of the bug is quite easy to spot with their bright
red coloring and the very unusual head shape. The adults are a grey
to brown coloring. Caution should be taken in getting too close to
these insects, as they can produce a very painful bite, resulting in
numbness and weeks to months to heal. They are also cannibalistic in
nature. Camera used was a Canon 30D, 100mm macro lens.
