- Kathy Shogren of Assaria, Ks. took this photo June 9, 2008 of a
wheel bug nymph, a member of the assassin family. Though not very
big, this stage of the bug is quite easy to spot with their bright
red coloring and the very unusual head shape. The adults are a grey
to brown coloring. Caution should be taken in getting too close to
these insects, as they can produce a very painful bite, resulting in
numbness and weeks to months to heal. They are also cannibalistic in
nature. Camera used was a Canon 30D, 100mm macro lens.

people confuse the dragonfly and damselfly. The dragonfly is on
the left. Besides the vast size difference, the telltale sign of
the damselfly is that when it lands, it folds it's wings up on
it's back. The dragonfly is unable to do this. This was taken at a

days after having 18 inches of snow, she saw two cross country skiers
in an area not far from her home. Using her Canon A95 digital
camera on program and opened up 1 1/2 stops to compensate for all
the white snow, she adjusted the blue shadows in Photoshop and
moved the skier in red for better composition.

- "Lunar Eclipse", by Dr. Ken Deitcher, of Albany, New
York. On the night of Saturday November 8, 2003 there was a total lunar eclipse.
Dr. Deitcher captured this celestial event with his Canon D60 camera and a 35-350mm lens.
Multiple exposures were taken over the 35 hour event and cut and pasted into a single image in Photoshop.

- This is a picture of a 235 ft, 2500 ton, 10800 bhp supply ship,
"Maersk Bonavista" taken Jan 17, 2002, towing the Semi -
Submersible oil rig "Henry Goodrich" from the NE Glory
Hole to the SW Glory Hole on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. The
recorded winds that day exceeded 112 mph. The sea state was 15 to
20+ meters. Captain Jerry Conway of St John's N.L was the master of
that trip. The picture was taken by Mr. Martin Payne p.eng. of St
john's whom was working on the rig.

first tower referred to as One World Trade Center was submitted by

1970, though work on some of the higher floors wasn't completed
until 1972. The second tower was being built and was completed
in April 1973. As the image reveals, the World Trade Center
was built once before, and it can be built again. Picture was

The location was along the coast just north of San Diego in the city
of Del Mar, Calif. The balloons used a special fuel mixture that
illuminated the interior to give them that definitive glow against
the sunset.

a composite of four photographs taken in different areas at different times. The
sunset and the fisherman were taken on the causeway leading to Sanibel, the
beach taken at Captiva Island and the gulls taken on the beach near
his hotel. All images were combined using Picture Publisher.

Deitcher explains, "I particularly wanted a photo of the old
Victorian houses of San Francisco known as 'Motif No. 2'. The
first Motif is the harbor in Rockport, MA. A relative drove me
to the spot for 10 minutes of photography, and it cost me a dinner
at an expensive restaurant. The original slide was taken on
Fujichrome film and scanned into my computer. The solarized
effect was created in Photoshop and the sun added graphically."

race at the Naval Training Center in San Diego. He then
brought it into Photoshop and applied the Wind filter to give the
image motion and the Neon filter to enhance the colors. The

- "The Ancient Mariner" is a sandwich of two slides. The
Mariner is an image of a statue in a harbor in Massachusetts taken
with a Canon A1 camera and a standard 50mm lens. The image was enlarged
in Photoshop so that it would have a dominant position in the sky
and then reduced the opacity to give it a ghostlike
appearance. It was then combined with a
slide of the Hale-Bopp Comet to produce the resultant image.

- Country Garden was submitted by Dr. Ken Deitcher of Albany, New
York. The image was taken as four separate images with a Canon
D30 camera and stitched together to create a panorama. A 28-135
mm lens was used. The butterfly was photographed at Wild Wings
Butterfly Zoo, Deerfield, Massachusetts, then pasted into position to
give a point of interest and focus to the photo.

California. Image was taken at a shopping mall window in San
Diego with a Canon A1 camera and a 50mm lens using Fuji Tungsten
slide film 400 ASA. The original image was a little static so
he chose one of the small hearts and created a crossed design using
the Gradient tool and tilted it for effect.

- "Olympic Gymnast" was photographed by Dr. Ken Deitcher
of Albany, New York, using a Canon T90 camera and a 100mm macro lens
on a tripod. The Giant Tree Frog was placed on a hanging
support and photographed at an angle, to give the illusion of
swinging.

- Larry Kelly of San Diego, California, used the
"sandwich" technique to make this image, entitled
"Lest We Forget." The Iwo Jima Memorial was
photographed in West Virginia using a Canon A-1 camera and a 50mm
Canon lens. The cemetery is the U.S. Military Cemetery in
Luxembourg, the burial site of Gen. George S. Patton. The
camera was the same using a 28mm wide-angle setting on a zoom lens.
After the sandwich was complete, an underexposed copy of the image
was made to create a somber mood.

- "Make Mine a Double" was submitted by Dr. Ken Deitcher
of Albany, New York. The humorous photo was taken with a Canon
A1 camera and a 100mm lens on Fujichrome Sensia film. The toad
was released after the photo was taken in a studio using two strobes
and umbrellas. Exposure was f5.6 at 1/60 sec.

- Dr. Ken Deitcher of Albany, New York, submitted this photo,
entitled "The Collection." The butterfly collection
was assembled and created in Picture Publisher. The individual
butterflies and moths were scanned using a flatbed scanner.
The images were placed into position and framed, and drop shadows
were used to create depth.

- "Americana" was submitted by Dr. Ken Deitcher of Albany,
New York. The photo was taken in a rural community a short
distance from Albany, just after the Fourth of July. A Canon
D30 digital camera with a 28-135 lens was used. Exposure was
set at f8; the camera was set at ISO 100.

- "Spacescape" was photographed in Shiprock, New Mexico.
Larry Kelly of San Diego, California, submitted this photo,
explaining that the eerie landscape gave him the idea of trying
various color filters, such as the red filter used in this image.
The result was manipulated in Photoshop, blackening the sky and
adding the celestial bodies in the background. A Pentax PZ-1
camera with a 28-105 zoom lens and Fuji Velvia film was used.

- "Vortex" was submitted by Dr. Ken Deitcher of Albany,
New York, and is a photograph taken in Disney World over ten years
ago at the Kodak Pavillion, with a 50mm lens. The two subjects
were photographed with a 500mm lens about 15 years ago at a beach in
the Caribbean. Finally, the two images were combined using
Picture Publisher. A Canon A1 camera was used for both images.

- "Tearful Liberty" is a second submission by Dr. Ken
Deitcher of Albany, New York, commemorating the victims of the
September 11 attacks. The Statue of Liberty was photographed
over ten years ago with a Canon A1 camera and a 70-210mm lens.
The ribbon was scanned on a flatbed scanner, and the tear was
created using Kai's Tools.

- "Drummer Boy" was submitted by Dr. Ken Deitcher and
depicts a boy waiting for a march to begin at a Civil War Encampment
in Loudonville, New York, at the Pryn House. The flag was
photographed at the same location. A Canon D30 digital camera
with a 28-135mm lens was used, and the two images were combined
using Photoshop software. This photo was selected for this
week to commemorate all those in the world affected by last week's
terrorist attacks in the United States.

cages and other objects photographed at Mystic Seaport, where
Rebekah was vacationing.

Hollyhock Hollow, a nature preserve near Rebekah's house.

his granddaughter Drue, who is actually seen twice in the above
photo. Ken used the computer application Picture Publisher to
cut and paste an image of Drue in a dance pose to replace a
porcelain ballerina doll that Drue was holding in a second
photograph taken of her. A Canon EOS D30 with a 28-70mm lens
was used.

which is of the underside of a red poppy flower, taken shortly after
a rain. A Canon E0S D30 digital camera and a 100mm macro lens
were used, along with a Canon ringflash. The highlighted star
