Web and Internet Content Searches
Web search engines allow users to input a word or phrase and view the resulting web
pages that contain that phrase. Many of them also include their own topic-based
Internet directories containing popular sites from their search databases.
- Fact Monster
- Fact Monster and its Homework Center have received national
recognition for their unbeatable reference materials, fun facts and
features, and individualized homework help.
- Infoseek
- This search engine and the few that follow make up the "original" search
engines that are well established and have extensive search databases. As there is
little noticeable difference in searching quality, your choice of a favorite search engine
will most likely be made by comparing the graphic layout and presentation of each.
- AltaVista
- Search web pages in any language, or look for images, video, and audio.
- Lycos
- Features a simple design with news and shopping easily accessible on the front page.
- Excite
- Excite offers slightly more content on the front page, with full news headlines, stock
quotes, sports scores, and more.
- Google
- Google has a very simple design, with only the name "Google" and a search box.
Just enter your search terms and browse the results. Note that
Google generally produces more results than the other search engines
listed here. This can be a benefit if you have limited search
results with other engines, though the results are sometimes a bit
overwhelming with popular search phrases.

- The most comprehensive image search on the web. Searching
for images on the internet has never been easier.
- MSN Search
- Very clean design with only a search box and links to separate search pages for phone
number and newsgroup searches.
- OpenTopia
- Free Online Encyclopedia. Opentopia is a directory of
mostly publicly available information, news and useful tools. We
search for you in several open directories and search engines.

- Earth Calendar
- The Earth Calendar is a daybook of holidays and celebrations
around the world. For the purpose of this web site a

- Expedia.com also offers street maps and driving directions. While
experience shows that Expedia’s directions are often shorter than
those provided by competitor Mapquest,
though not as many maps and features are available on the Web site.
- How Far Is It?
- A no-frills web utility that allows users to enter two cities from anywhere in the world
and returns the distance between them. Other useful information like the cities'
longitude and latitudes, elevations, and populations are returned, as well.
- USPS
Zip Code Lookup
- The U.S.
Postal Service provides this quick and easy way to find the zip
code given any location in the U.S. and vice versa.
- 411 Locate
- Search for people's e-mail addresses by entering their name, phone number, and any other
information you know about the person. When using this and other services, however,
keep in mind that the database primarily consists only of e-mail addresses that have been
manually entered by the owners of the addresses. Therefore, no results may be
returned for a given name even if you know they have an e-mail address.
- Switchboard
- Very nice site that gives you the phone number and address of any person or business
with a listed phone number. Unfortunately, you cannot search "backwards"
from the phone number to the person's name using this service.
- AnyWho
- Brought to you by AT&T, this
service also provides phone numbers for people and businesses. Additionally, users
can search a database of
toll-free "800" numbers.
- SuperPages.com
- The "yellow pages on the web" lets you find businesses by name, category, or
location.
- 555-1212.com
- This is another utility to find people and businesses in the U.S. and Canada. In
addition, an extensive collection of "people finders" in other countries is
included in the World
Directories page.
- infoSpace.com
- The front page of infoSpace features an easily-accessible search box for personal phone
numbers and e-mail addresses, as well as online shopping links, an online personal address
book, classified sections, and more.
- Bigfoot
- Search for personal e-mail addresses or phone numbers and get news and sports updates at
once on this page.
- 1-800-U.S. Search
- If you're having trouble finding someone using ordinary searches, this service will
access U.S. public records, private investigators, and other authorities for a fee and
provide results in about an hour.

- ClassMates.com is a comprehensive online database of high school alumni from around the
country. After registering for free, users can list their information in the Alumni
Directory, search through directories from over 30,000 high schools, access reunion
planning and location details, and view photos and yearbooks.

directory for all the US States and. is updated frequently.
- AreaConnect.com
- Users can access local information sources and find concise
information about their own US city or others - including city and

- Search for people, phone numbers, and addresses, as well as words and phrases on the
Internet and words in the dictionary or encyclopedia.

Topic-Based Internet Directories
Although Yahoo! is one of the most famous, plenty of topic-based site directories
exists. Some are multi-layered and extremely extensive, while others are less
comprehensive and offer a more personal touch.

- Each sex offender is highlighted on the map and you can zoom in to
view the offender, address, and other information. The map also
links to the state registry for additional information such as the
vehicles offenders drive and their convictions.

- The "original" Internet directory, Yahoo! is still one of the most extensive
and popular in its field.

- Similar to Yahoo! in concept, Snap offers a slightly different design and feel.

- This site ranks its contents by popularity, judged by the number of times each site is
visited through the directory itself. It's not entirely scientific, but sometimes
this feature is handy.

- Acronym

- A searchable database containing 57,000 common acronyms and
abbreviations about all subjects, with a focus on computers,
technology, telecommunications, and the military.
- Argus Clearinghouse
- As the name suggests, this site is an online clearinghouse of Internet directories
developed by librarians. Includes value ratings of listed sites.
- About.com
- The topic-based Internet directory with a human touch. Each topic is maintained by
an individual staff member at About.com who annotates and ranks selected links.
- IPL
Associations on the Net
- This is large collection of over 2,000 Internet sites that are
home to a wide variety of groups and organizations. Types of groups
include everything from business trade associations and consumer
groups to political parties and health advocacy groups. You may also
search the large database for keywords.

Resources on the Web
- This site produced by the University of Michigan has organized links to thousands of
online statistical databases in over two dozen fields ranging from economics and the
environment to science and transportation.

Miscellaneous Searching Tools
Here are some Internet search utilities that just didn't quite fit in any of the

- Worldwide source of unequalled, current, digital satellite imagery
and aerial photography in both color and black and white.
Search for imagery by zip code, address, city, county, or
coordinates.
- eHow
- An interesting search site that will return instructions on how to do various tasks from
carving a pumpkin to jump-starting a car or changing a door handle. Believe it or
not, but this site actually seems to work!
- Monster.com
- One of the largest job search sites on the Internet, Monster.com allows you to conduct
job searches within the U.S. and internationally, create a resume, find out about job
fairs in the area, and much more. This is a great resource for those moving to a new
area and looking to relocate their careers, as well.

- This Internet directory is designed specifically with seniors in mind. Special
topics include medical concerns, RV info, vacation and retirement planning, hobbies, and
more.

- Legal Encyclopedia
- This site provides articles on almost any legal topic written in a
common sense style, and links to other helpful Web sites.
- FindLaw
- Comprehensive directory and search engine for everything pertaining to law and legal
issues.
- Companies Online
- Discover the U.S. companies behind the websites with this company search site. As
with ComFind, you may search by company name or by the company's product service.
Additionally, the company's stock ticker symbol may be used.
- Cliché Finder
- Interesting search tool that locates clichés that include the search words that you
enter from within its index of over 3,000 clichés.
